These include the food industry, retailers and wholesalers, hotels and restaurants, research institutes, health services and mortuaries.Heat Pumps work hand in hand with wet under floor heating systems due to their low operational temperature so they are ideally suited to new builds. Systems can be retro-fitted into existing properties but careful consideration must be given to reduce the heat losses and the installation of a wet under floor heating system.
A Ground Source Heat Pump circulates a mixture of water and anti-freeze around a pipe called a ground loop/ captor coil which has to be buried horizontally into the ground. When the liquid is pumped around the ground loop/captor system from the heat pump, the loop/captor coil absorbs low temperature heat from the ground. The heat pump only requires an increase in the temperature of the water mix of just a few degrees. It is then put through a process involving a series of heat exchangers and a compressor which is a similar principle to that of a domestic fridge.
The heat is concentrated so that temperatures can reach between 45°C and 65°C which will then feed an under-floor heating system, radiators and the domestic hot water tank. When the heat pump system is reversed the system can cool and discharge the heat from the property back into the ground. The length of the ground loop depends on the size of the heat pump required for your home and the amount of heat you need - longer loops draw more heat from the ground. Normally the loop is laid flat, or coiled into trenches about two metres deep, but if there is not enough space in your garden you can install a vertical loop to a depth of up to 100 metres.
Ground Source Heat Pumps work best with heating systems which are optimized to run at a lower water temperature than is commonly used in UK boiler and radiator systems. As such, they make an ideal partner for under floor heating systems.
